Taken from the well-known Paramounts Pictures film series that began in 2018, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is a video game developed by the Catania studio Stormind Games that brings fear to a new interactive level.
That of A Quiet Place it’s a silent apocalypse. The monstrosities that have invaded the Earth are blind but equipped with a superfine hearing system, such as to pick up the slightest noise. That’s why the survivors stopped running, jumping, singing, using their real voice. In that world, even opening a creaking door can prove fatal. A truly peculiar concept, which A Quiet Place: The Road Aheada video game inspired by the film series of the same name by Paramount Picturesmanages to take full advantage.
What it’s like to play in the apocalypse of A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead
In this new formula of the franchise, we play as Alexa young woman forced to survive in the silence of the new world. Luckily, she’s not alone. At her side she has a man she loves and an affectionate father. The problem is the outside world, the one in which we must avoid any sound but which at the same time hides medicines and resources that are fundamental for survival. Alex indeed suffers from asthma. Having a hyperventilation attack can make her easy prey to alien creatures, who are always listening, according to writings found in city ruins.
In A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, everything bends to the gameplay to convey this to us constant sense of anxiety. While exploring, Alex must be careful, always. When walking, especially over puddles, aluminum cans and pieces of glass. When he opens a door. When he stresses his lungs. For this reason it is good to collect as many inhalers as possible. Only when it rains or in soundproofed rooms is it possible to catch a breath. This, in terms of gameplay, translates into a careful and slow approach, based mainly on the right pressure on the left stick.
The story of the first horror video game ever produced: it terrified children of the 80s
The more delicate the touch, the less noise we will be able to produce when walking, opening air ducts and so on. A description that could refer to a feeling of boredom and slowness. Actually the gameplay worksnot only because it is characterized by fluid and precise controls, but above all because it allows for a perfect pace of play to keep the tension high throughout the adventure, especially in the first few hours.

A QUIET PLACE: THE ROAD AHEAD | The creatures are insensitive to light but not to sound.
That’s not all, because the game uses an interesting feature to bring terror directly into the home: the controller, in the case of the PlayStation 5 DualSense, or the headphones attached to it in the case of Xbox Series to intercept external sounds. In other words, coughing, talking and more generally making noise near the microphone of the controller or headphones will get us discovered from disturbing enemies. A truly original mechanic, which can be deactivated at any time, which takes immersion to the nth degree.
This is however enhanced by the first-person view and the careful sound design, made of broken glass underfoot, the rustle of tall leaves and much more. In short, you don’t explore lightly in A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, especially when a monster is on your tail, waiting for the slightest sound. To surround everything, a plot that immediately gets to the heart of things, sometimes predictable, but still functional, given that it manages to bring out the characters and the game world itself well. Between warnings on the walls, letters (some wall of text), drawings and other artifacts you can find during your exploration, it’s easy to imagine what life was like before the invasion.

A QUIET PLACE: THE ROAD AHEAD | After the initial stages of the game, Alex will have a device at his disposal that helps monitor the noise levels produced during his actions. Very useful.
To conclude, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead delivers an unpretentious but particular, intense experiencelasting approximately 6-7 hours, where tension and suspense are at the center. A successful union between cinematographic imagery and videogame language which demonstrates, among other things, the ability of Stormind Games, one of the liveliest studios on the Italian scene, to know how to manage an intellectual property of a certain importance.
