Due to the international downturn which affected all Meta services starting from 7pm today, Wednesday 11 December, thousands of people around the world are having problems sending messages on Whatsapp and viewing or uploading their content on Instagram. The two platforms explained that they are working to resolve the technical problem that triggered the outages.
From 7.00pm today, Wednesday 11 Decemberthousands of people are having problems with all Meta services. In fact, the down affected Facebook, Whatsapp And Instagrambut disservices were also reported by Threads and Messenger users.
The reports come not only from Italy, but also from Germany, Spain, and outside Europe, from United StatesBrazil, Australia and Japan. This is a down of international reachlike those that affected Meta last year: even on June 6, 2023, Meta’s services had simultaneously caused disruptions in every corner of the world.
Why can’t you send messages on Whatsapp
In Italy the platform that seems to have caused the most problems starting from 7pm today was Whatsapp: on Downdetector, the site that monitors the functioning of the main digital services, the peak was reached immediately after the start of the downturn, at 7.02pm, when reports have exceeded 14,000. At 8.36pm, after more than an hour, the reports continue to arrive, but remain in the order of a few thousand.

Most of the problems concern thesending messages (77%): users are unable to send messages to their contacts, as would happen if their smartphone were not covered by the connection.
As is now tradition, users are dealing with Meta disservices they flocked to X (it was Twitter)where the hashtag #whatsappdown ended up trending with more than 10,000 posts. “I kept turning the Internet off and on again when it was actually #whatsappdown”, one user jokes. Like this post, there are hundreds the memes published that make fun of Meta’s downside.
At 7.49pm the official Whatsapp account X updated its users on the situation: “We are aware of some problems accessing WhatsApp. We are actively working on a solution and we are starting to see a return to normality for most people. We expect things to come back back to normal soon“.
Problems also on Instagram
Instagram also caused a lot of problems: at 8.40 pm thehashtag #instagramdown it has been used more than 36,400 times. Here too the most popular post is the usual one that goes crazy on the X home (and before Twitter) when the Meta platforms cause problems: “Everybody coming to twitter to see if Facebook and Instagram down” Twitter to see if Facebook and Instagram are down”).
On Instagram users are having many difficulties uploading stories or posts: 80% of reports concern this type of disservice. The official Instagram account we know there is a technical problem which prevents some people from accessing Instagram. We are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”
