OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work: the agent that completes projects alone

Written by Jason Miller

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Workan agent built into ChatGPT designed to tackle tasks that go beyond simply answering a question. The system collects information between different applications, produces finished materials such as spreadsheets, presentations, documents and web apps, and follows complex projects for hours, breaking them down into smaller steps to complete independently.

An agent built on GPT-5.6 and Codex technology

ChatGPT Lavoro is based on this CodexOpenAI’s agent tool that today has over 5 million weekly users. Born as a coding agent for developers, it is now used by more than 1 million people even for activities unrelated to programming, a sign that its capabilities lend themselves to wider use.

To handle complex multi-step tasks, OpenAI paired ChatGPT Work with the new flagship model GPT-5.6available from today in general access and optimized for reasoning on complex activities and for the production of materials consistent with models and reference files provided by the user.

In internal tests conducted by OpenAI, almost all of the company’s teams, including finance and sales, have already adopted ChatGPT Work and Codex in their daily work. In the sales department, the agent has turned an exploratory conversation into a bespoke proof of concept within 24 hoursa process that typically takes weeks. In finance, he reduced monthly closing and forecasting times from days to a few hours, taking care of finding the data, reconciling them in Excel or Sheets and building the summary slides.

On your computer, ChatGPT can now access local files and applications to get things done, while for web work a integrated browser allows him to consult online sites, tools and documents. The Codex app now merges into the new ChatGPT desktop app, which brings together Chat, Work and Codex in a single interface, available on every plan including the free one, for Windows and Mac. Codex maintains the developer functions, with the addition of inline editing in diffs, review of pull requests in a side panel and support for multiple repositories in the same project. The previous ChatGPT desktop app is renamed ChatGPT Classic: it remains installable but will no longer receive updates.

Other new features include Sites in ChatGPTin public beta, which allows you to transform a project into an interactive site or web app that can be shared via URL, useful for live dashboards, launch calendars or internal portals. Scheduled Activities, on the other hand, make ChatGPT act even when the user is away from the computer: he can monitor Slack or Microsoft Teams messages and update documents or slides accordingly.

For Enterprise and Edu customers, OpenAI has provided an automatic review of sensitive actions before they are executed: during adversarial red teaming, this control has blocked 100% of attempts to extract protected data. Administrators can also set spending limits in the Admin Console, managing access to plugins, browsers and related tools.

ChatGPT Lavoro is available from today on web and mobile for Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, with the extension to Plus and Business plans expected in the next few days. Usage follows the same consumption structure as Codex: more complex tasks take up a larger share than a normal chat request.
