“AI Personas” are arriving on Spotify: they are artists created by AI, and they are cut off from recommendations

Spotify decided to bring order among the artists generated by artificial intelligence. From mid-September the platform will introduce the badge AI Persona label that will appear on profiles identified as not attributable to a real human being, excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations.

The mechanism is not based only on the self-declaration of artists, although Spotify allows it immediately. The service will also carry out an internal review of profiles, identifying those whose name and image appear to represent photorealistic identities constructed by AI. The scan will start from the artists they have already reached predefined listening thresholdsto intercept the most popular profiles first.

Once applied, the brand will appear in the profile banner, in the About section, in search results and in the song rows within playlists. However, the exclusion from recommendations is not absolute: users who choose to follow an AI Persona profile will continue to see the suggested contents, an explicit signal of interest that the platform respects.

The measure is part of a broader strategy, launched in September 2025when Spotify introduced the first rules to label AI-generated songs with industry-standard techniques and to ban unauthorized voice clones and deepfakes.

The balance between AI features and low-quality content: Spotify’s squeeze

The group seeks a delicate compromise: on the one hand it pushes on functions such as Prompted PlaylistsAI DJ, integrated chat and future AI-generated remixes; on the other hand, it must stem the proliferation of content churned out in series, which risks deteriorating the listening experience and pushing subscribers to cancel the service.

Spotify clarified that the judgment concerns the artist’s public identity, not the music itself: the badge says nothing about how the song was madeinformation that remains entrusted to other platform tools, such as AI Credits and SongDNA. In the official announcement, the company wrote that its programming aims to enhance authentic artists who build a career in music, while recognizing everyone’s freedom to choose how to present themselves.

Artists labeled by mistake will be able to submit appealand a tool will also arrive in the coming months that will allow users to report suspicious profiles that have not yet been flagged. The details of the policy are explained in the company’s official blog.

The possibility of self-declaring yourself as an AI Person is active from today, August 11, 2026via Spotify for Artists, while the badges visible to the public will only arrive from next month. The distinction will also be useful to avoid confusing AI artists with remixes and covers generated by artificial intelligence, soon permitted by the new licensing agreements with labels UMG And Merlinwho will still continue to pay the artists involved.
