A new 7 euro coin arriving from January 1st: what we know about the story that went viral

Images of a 7 euro coin that would enter the market starting from 1 January 2025 are circulating on social media. The news is essentially false: there are coins that have this value, at least from a nominal point of view, but they are always coins commemorative.

In the last few hours it has lit up a search on social media. Posts and videos about one started popping up everywhere coin worth 7 euros which should arrive on the market starting from January 1st. There is also a linked graphic. The design is the same as the 2 euro coin but instead of the number 2 there is a 7 drawn on the front. It’s unclear what’s on the back.

The news is essentially false. And it’s not the first time it has appeared. In all likelihood it all starts from Portugal. Last autumn the news circulated that the House from Moedathe equivalent of our State Mint, would begin minting a commemorative coin for Cristiano Ronaldo. Official value: 7 euros, like Ronaldo’s shirt. The news, in this case too, was false.

It does not appear on the official Casa da Moeda website at the moment no reference to this coin. Also in this case the graphics of the coin seem to have been made by artificial intelligence. Searching the archive with the key “Ronaldo” the maximum that appears is a book on which the writer collaborated Ronaldo Bressane.

According to the ministry, Pikachu is a symbol of Italian cultural heritage: the case of the stamp

It is true, however, that some time ago the Casa da Moeda had coined others commemorative coins with a value close to those 7 euros we are talking about. In the digital store of Casa Da Moeda for example, you can find a coin created to commemorate the 5th Centenary of the journey with which Fernão de Magalhães, known in Italy as Ferdinand Magellanmanaged to complete the first circumnavigation of the globe.

In this case the nominal value of the coin was 7.50 euros. It looks completely different from normal euros and is part of a series of four coins that celebrate the journey. It is sold as “Proof silver”, in jargon they are coins created specifically for collections. At the moment it is not available online on the Casa da Moeda portal but we can see that it was coming sold together with a box set for 59.00 euros. On eBay it starts from 95 euros.
