GrapheneOS, an open source version of Android designed with particular attention to security and privacy, is preparing to expand its support beyond Google Pixel smartphones. The organization has in fact illustrated plans to officially bring the operating system to Motorola devices starting from 2027starting from high-end models and subsequently also arriving at foldable smartphones.
The program initially includes support for a traditional Motorola flagshipfollowed by integration on the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra models. The latter would represent an important innovation for GrapheneOS, because it would become the first clamshell smartphone officially compatible with the operating system.
The choice to focus on 2027 devices is mainly linked to security requirements imposed by GrapheneOS. According to the foundation, the current Motorola Signature and Razr are close to the required standards, but still have some gaps related to hardware memory tagging and secure element integration. The organization believes that the next generation of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processors can instead meet these requirements.
Motorola – GrapheneOS: a collaboration destined to last a long time?
They could also arrive at a later stage cheaper Motorola modelsbut to achieve this goal it will be necessary to improve the security features of Qualcomm chips intended for the lower ranges. Motorola should also ensure a seven-year software support perioda requirement that the current more accessible models do not satisfy.
The collaboration between Motorola and GrapheneOS was announced in March 2026 with the aim of Strengthen smartphone security. Until now, GrapheneOS has offered official support exclusively for Google Pixels, a compatibility that will continue in the future with the arrival of the Pixel 11 series.
According to the foundation, however, some changes to Pixel support within the Android Open Source Project have made it more complex to maintain adequate compatibility. Motorola, on the contrary, is carrying out a substantial part of the work needed to adapt GrapheneOS to your devicesthus paving the way for a new generation of smartphones oriented more towards privacy and security.
