Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp down today: problems being resolved with the Meta Apps

The Meta Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp apps have been down or malfunctioning since early afternoon today, Friday 12 June 2026. Multiple reports on Downdetector. Meta’s spokesperson said the issues are being resolved.

From the first afternoon today, Friday 12 June 2016, were found problems with the applications of Half Facebook And Instagramwhich for a couple of hours resulted in down or malfunctioning. WhatsAppwho initially did not seem to be involved in the event that affected the company’s various social platforms Menlo Parkalso experienced access problems. The cause of disservices was not communicated, but the problems have been resolved or are in the process of being resolved, as stated by the Meta spokesperson Andy Stone on X (the late Twitter).

“We are coming back, although it may take some time before everything is completely back to normal,” Stone said on Elon Musk’s social media platform. In a previous message, during the down, he had released the following message. “We are aware that some users are currently experiencing difficulties accessing our services. We are working to resolve the issue.“The problems have been seen worldwide, with most reports coming from the United States and Europe.

Multiple reports on Downdetector.it, with the red down curve rising dramatically starting from around 3.30pm Italian time. Curiously, by clicking on the icons of the various applications in “difficulty”, for about an hour the error message “404 – Page not found“, probably due to the intense traffic. It is now possible to check the progress of the outage for each application involved.

What happened

Facebook, from our tests, showed more problems than Instagram, which only showed a lot slow to load posts, but still working on smartphone. We also encountered no difficulties on WhatsApp. Facebook, on the other hand, when we clicked on the notifications in the desktop version, we received the following error message: “Oops! A problem has occurred. We are working to resolve it as soon as possible”, with the bell icon continuing to flash. Trying to do refresh on the wall or posts, the page kept loading indefinitely. After several attempts we managed to access the contents, but subsequently the board became non-functional again. We couldn’t even apply reactions to the posts, which were “rejected” by the system after an apparent and regular sending. Also problems with stories and feeds. On Downdetector, 68% of reports concerned problems accessing the App. At the moment, at 18:02, everything seems to be working normally again.

On Instagram the peak of reports (over 1,500) was reached at 4.47pm. At 3.40pm there was a first peak with a subsequent slowdown in reports, then a new, rapid surge in the curve starting from 4.23pm. The disservices reported by users concerned access (35 percent), apps (32 percent) and publication (21 percent). Also up Messenger several problems were encountered: the reporting curve began a significant downward phase around 3.45pm, but starting from 4.13pm it began to surge again, as shown in the graph below.

The causes of the downtime of the Meta apps have not been communicated, but computer problems may have been involved server of the company as well as software updates defective. One cannot be ruled out hacker attackbut this is the least realistic hypothesis. When all of a company’s applications are affected, the problem is most likely at the source, as the message from the Meta spokesperson suggests. In these cases you don’t have to install the Apps, change your password or do other things from the menu: you simply have to wait for the problem to be resolved, as is happening with the downtime this afternoon.
