Is Meta developing smart glasses capable of continuously recording?

Meta is reportedly developing a new prototype of smart glasses equipped with a mode called “super sensing“, designed to collect information on the surrounding environment in an almost continuous way. The indiscretion comes from Financial Timesaccording to which the device could constantly record audio and capture images at regular intervalssubsequently allowing the user to query Meta AI on the information collected.

The glasses could reportedly take photographs every few seconds and keep sound recording active, giving the AI-based assistant a constant vision of what is happening around the user. The information collected would not necessarily be retained in its original form.

One of the solutions taken into consideration would in fact provide that images and audio recordings are not archived or made directly available to the user. Instead, metadata would be extracted, subsequently sent to Meta’s servers so that artificial intelligence can process them and respond to user requests. According to supporters of this approach, this system would reduce part of the issues related to the protection of privacy.

The new prototypes of Meta glasses raise some doubts

Despite this, the project continues to raise numerous questions. Meta is already the center of attention for the development of facial recognition capabilitiesfor some reports regarding the improper use of current smart glasses and for the diffusion of hardware changes that allow you to deactivate the LED used to signal recording.

Precisely to counteract these changes, the company has announced a software update that automatically disables the camera when it detects an alteration to the light signaling system. However, according to the Financial Timesin the “super sensing” the LED could remain off. Meta had already anticipated this approach in a document published in July 2025, explaining that the light indicator would be intended exclusively for voluntary acquisitions of photos and videoswhile during functions assisted by artificial intelligence it would not necessarily be activated.

The company is also reportedly evaluating whether to use the data collected to train your artificial intelligence models and would not rule out making these features available on some glasses models already marketed. When asked about the matter, Meta did not comment specifically on the internal prototypeshowever reiterating the intention to develop devices useful in daily life while maintaining privacy among the fundamental elements of the project.
