Meta is about to change, and not just in the content that will be tolerated on Instagram and Facebook. According to the New York Times, founder Mark Zuckerberg has also decided to change the internal policies regarding the issues of Diversity and Inclusion, starting from the office bathrooms.
The change of direction does not stop at fact-checking. Halfthe company that manages Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, will now also follow different policies for issues concerning ethnic minorities, the LGBTQIA+ community and in general all those categories that fell within the policies of Diversity and Inclusion. A change of direction that not only affects the contents on the platform but also the new ones internal rules from the company.
The New York Times photographed the Meta’s new structure in a report by Mike Isaac, Sheera Frenkel and Kate Conger. The company for almost 70,000 employees and by the value of 1,554 billion dollars it will no longer be the one we know, probably also in terms of decision-making methods. In fact, the new orientation was defined directly by Mark Zuckerberg within a few weeks.
What’s changing inside Meta
The first change is the announcement that Meta would have abandoned work on the topics of Diversity and Inclusion. One of the gestures that marked this detachment was the request to remove tampons and pads for the period from the men’s bathrooms. The presence of tampons and sanitary napkins served to protect non-binary employees or those undergoing gender transition who preferred to use the men’s bathrooms.
What users notice on the platforms will be in line with the Zuckerberg’s new directionexhibited to the public just a few days before Donald Trump’s official inauguration as president of the White House. The policies forHate Speech will now become the policies forHateful Conduct.
The margins of tolerance, at least from the first information, will widen. Among the new rules it should be possible associating mental illnesses and sexual orientation. At the moment the picture is still confusing, apparently also for the employees themselves who explained that they had read sometimes contradictory rules. And again, second 404 AvgMeta will also remove themes, in the sense of backgrounds and colors, related to the trans and non-binary communities in Messenger chats.
