Payments with POS and ATMs, the problems continue: what happened and when they will be resolved

The problems with electronic payments continue today, Friday 29 November 2024. The downtime of Bancomat, PagoBancomat and Nexi began at 11.25am on Thursday 28th with peak reports around 2.00pm. A new peak was recorded this morning at 08:00. The outages are linked to problems on the network of the French company Worldline.

They continue disservices with i electronic payments also today Friday 29 November 2024, after the down that hit the circuits Nexi, ATM, PagoBancomat starting from 11.25am on Thursday 28th. Also involved POS. At the moment it is not clear when the problems will be completely resolved. The reason for the down is linked to a technical problem registered on the French company’s network Worldlineamong the main companies of digital payments to the world. Its services are used by a huge number of companies, including in Italy.

Problems with Bancomant and Pos, what happened

Our country was the one mainly affected by the problem, as can be seen from the statement released by Worldline at 8.46pm on November 28:

“On Thursday 28 November 2024, as of 11:25 CET, Worldline observed disruptions in its payments ecosystem. The impacts are mainly localized in Italy, with some side effects in other markets. The disruptions do not originate from payment gateways, but from certain authorization issuing services provided to certain banks. Worldline regrets the situation and any potential inconvenience.” Nexi Payments instead he spoke of an “incident relating to a generic and widespread interruption of the network in Italy”. Among the Italian banks involved are: BPER Bank And BPM desk.

The French giant explained that the interruption of the service would still affect “only a small part of payments”, while the majority of users would not experience such problems. Wordline also confirmed that the technical problem is “external responsibility”, therefore it involves its network but there is no direct involvement in the down. We’re talking about a “generic interruption“, which the technicians are scrupulously monitoring to reach a solution as quickly as possible. At the moment it is not clear when the disruptions will completely disappear.

Which banks are affected by the outages?

As indicated, among the banking services affected by the downturn are those of BPER Banca and Banco BPM, as can be seen from the graphs Downdetector. As regards BPER Banca, after the peak of reports at 2pm yesterday (over 600) the trend of the curve continued to decline until 2am today. Starting from 05:00 there was a new surge in reports: around 08:00 in the morning there were almost 500. For Banco BPM the situation seems better, with a peak of almost 300 reports at 14:00 on 28 November, a progressive decline until 02:00 at night and a new peak at 08:00 today, with around 100 reports.

This morning there are several people who are still experiencing payment problems, for example at bars and other commercial activities. In addition to the use of credit cardthe disservices also concern withdrawalsonline payments on bank portals and via device (smartphone). There are some interruptions with the circuit VISA: after the peak at 2pm yesterday (100 reports), this morning Downdetector reports around 30.
