From the creators of Wolfenstein, in collaboration with Lucasfilm, comes Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle, a new video game that promises a perfect “Indy” style adventure with flicks, puzzles, fights and lots of exploration. All from a first-person view.
Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle manages to realize a dream that has remained dormant for too long: living an adventure in the shoes of the most famous archaeologist in the history of cinema. For this purpose, the video game developed by MachineGames use the first person view in order to guarantee total identification with Indy. His features are clearly those of the actor Harrison Ford when young, admirable during cutscenes or in particular game situations. A risky but functional choice for immersion, which above all allows us to avoid simplistic analogies with other similar titles such as Uncharted and Tomb Raider, two franchises that have made archaeological adventure and the charisma of the protagonists their strong points, using but the third person view.
Returning to the game published by Bethseda, it is set between the films Raiders of the Lost Ark And the Last Crusade. The year of setting of Indiana Jones and The Ancient Circle it is therefore the 1937. One night, a mysterious man manages to steal a particular artifact, a cat mummy to be exact. Indy wants to find out why. From here begins a journey of fisticuffs, puzzles and exploration, which starts from the United States and continues to Rome, Giza, Sukhothai.
What it means to be Indiana Jones
In the initial screen, there is the archaeologist from behind, dressed in his classic brown leather jacket and the hat on his head. Once “New Game” is selected, the view narrows and we immediately start playing. This is an interesting detail: despite the strong cinematic nature, as it should be, Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle takes full advantage of the peculiarities of the videogame medium, focusing on an adventurous and engaging pace. And this taking into account the numerous but not tedious interlude scenes. Such a pace is possible because the gameplay allows various approaches and situationsto be managed according to our nature.

To avoid spoilers, we will only tell the parenthesis in Rome, which includes Castel Sant’Angelo occupied by Mussolini’s Blackshirts. The climate of the 1930s is perfectly reproduced within the game, thanks to the fascist-era propaganda posters stuck on the walls, the neat uniforms of the enemies and all the objects in the settings. Even the places, such as the Sistine Chapel and the Colonnade of St. Peter, highlight great care on the part of the development studio. Not that there was any doubt, considering what was demonstrated in the Nazi dystopia of Wolfenstein.
Such care makes it immersive exploration, which is the true beating heart of the game. The settings may appear confusing at first, but in reality they are a pretext to start a truly satisfying exploratory flow. In the case of Rome, we had to disguise ourselves as priests so as not to be recognized by the fascists, venture into secret passages with only candlelight and photograph Latin inscriptions while the Roman clergy tried to go about their daily lives. There were in the middle mandolin strokes on the heads of unaware enemies and climb with the whip. In short, the structure of the game allows you to undertake a series of actions, driven by the pure pleasure of discovery, leading to the completion of the main and secondary missions without almost realizing it. And these are just a few examples.

INDIANA JONES AND THE ANCIENT CIRCLE | Indy’s whip characteristic can also be useful in bringing enemies closer to him.
To do all this Indy must take into account only two parameters: health and resistance. This last point adds greater complexity to the action, because going blindly against enemies means losing all your energy and remaining an easy prey to fascist (and Nazi in other settings) beatings. For this reason it is necessary to rely on objects scattered around (musical instruments, pans, bottles, brooms) which can facilitate clashes or distract enemies. Also the whip it proves fundamental, both for disarming and annoying opponents and for climbing into unreachable areas.
It adds to this the stealth componentthat is, the action of sneaking undisturbed into high-surveillance areas. It’s not just one matter of fists and enemies: as is obvious to expect from Indiana Jones, the title also focuses on environmental puzzles, through interaction with ancient ruins that hide traps but also treasures. In short, we are talking about an effective mix that manages to transform theepic nature of the film series. That’s not all, because by accumulating points (which can also be unlocked by photographing particular views with our splendid 1930s camera) we can make available new abilities for Indy. An example is Second Chance: when knocked out, the archaeologist can crawl towards his hat to stand up and resume the fight, thus skipping the game over.

The only real disappointment comes from the graphics front. On Xbox Series S, the platform on which we tested the game, the levels seen in the trailers published so far are far from being achieved. It is true that the console in question is less powerful than the Series Harrison Ford is reproduced faithfully, like the other primary characters (one is played by the actress Alessandra Mastronardi), the general effect is to deal with artificial models made from blank stares and wooden animations. A sensation that becomes even more evident with the secondary non-player characters (the famous NPCs). The issue of the animations is also sometimes reflected during the gameplay, specifically when Indy has to drop an object to open a door and then pick it up again. These are little things that interrupt the flow praised above. Luckily we’re not talking about anything invalidating, it’s just strange to see these choices in 2024, especially from a studio as renowned as MachineGames.
To conclude therefore, Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle is a title that will find its way into the hearts of those who not only loved the films produced by LucasFilm, but also those who are looking for a wide-ranging adventure, in capable of giving the right value to one of the symbols of the imagination created by Hollywood. The game will be available from December 9 on Xbox Series X|S and PCalso via Game Pass subscription. It will then arrive in the Spring 2025 also on PlayStation 5.
