Google will allow for change Gmail addressa possibility never offered to users until now: keeping the same Google account and all the associated data, but replacing it the name of the email address @gmail.com. The news began circulating in recent days within the Telegram group Google Pixel Hubwhere some users have reported references to this feature appearing in a Google support document available in Hindi.
What initially appeared as a test or preview is now confirmed by official Google documentationwhich dedicates a specific page to the item “Change your Google Account email” in the “Managing email addresses” section of the Google Account Help.
The ability to change your Gmail address without having to create a new account represents a significant change in the ecosystem of Google services: until now, changing the main email inevitably meant opening a new profile and manually reconfiguring all the connected services, a limit that – as noted Forbes — has affected the digital identity of Gmail users for years.
Google has a new button: what the + symbol is for
How changing your Gmail address will work
The new function will allow you to create a new email address @gmail.com associated with the same Google Accountwithout losing data or services. As Google’s official guide makes clear, the change does not lead to elimination of the previous address. In detail:
- it is possible create a new address which ends with @gmail.comif available;
- your Google Account remains unchangedas well as access to Gmail, Drive, Photos, YouTube and other services;
- emails, contacts, files and settings they are not deleted or moved;
- the old Gmail address remains active as an alternative address and continues to receive messages;
- Previous Gmail addresses cannot be deleted from the account.
In fact, the guide specifies that, even after the change, all previous email addresses remain associated with your Google Account. To remove them completely, your only option is to delete the entire account and create a new one with a different Gmail address.
When the feature will arrive and where to check if it’s available
The ability to change your Gmail address is not yet available to all users. Google indicates that the function is rendered accessible progressivelywithout providing official dates for individual countries, including Italy.
To check if the option is already active on your account, see the official documentation indicates the following path:
Google Account → Personal Information → Email → Google Account Email
If the entry is present in the “Email Google Account” section Change your Google Account emailit means that the account is enabled for the function. Otherwise, the absence of the option simply means that the change is not yet available to that user.
The guide also clarifies that creating new Gmail addresses associated with an account is subject to precise limits: You can create a new address @gmail.com only once every 12 monthsuntil a maximum of three new addresses over timefor a total of four Gmail addresses in total for the same account.
